1. PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN

01

Choose a Trusted Caregiver

Identify a trusted person to take care of your children if you are detained.

02

Establish Legal Guardianship

File a standby guardianship or power of attorney for your children if you are not detained.

03

Authorize Emergency Pickups

Give your children's school, daycare, and doctors the names of authorized individuals who can pick them up if you don't.

04

Prepare Emergency Contacts

Give your children a list of important phone numbers and emergency contacts, including the person you want to care for them, in case of emergency.

2. PROTECT YOUR MONEY

01

Financial Power of Attorney

Execute a financial Power of Attorney so someone you trust can help you get your money in case of emergency.

02

Organize Financial Records

Write down the bank and account information for your bank accounts, insurance plans, pensions, and other financial information.

03

Set Up Money Transfers

Link your bank account to a trusted money transfer service, like Western Union, so you and your family can access your funds from overseas.

04

Secure Account Recovery

If possible, use your email address instead of your cell phone number for account recovery, so you can still access your money if you are deported without your cell phone.

3. PROTECT YOUR DOCUMENTS

01

Renew Identification

Renew passports and other identification documents before they expire.

02

Organize Your Documents

Use the checklist to organize your important documents.

03

Store Original Documents Safely

Store original documents in a safe, secure location that a trusted family member can access if necessary.

04

Keep Digital Copies

Keep digital copies in a secure place or with someone you trust.

4. PROTECT YOURSELF

01

Memorize Emergency Contacts

Memorize phone numbers of emergency contacts and make sure they will accept calls from unknown numbers.

02

Seek Qualified Legal Advice

Speak with a qualified nonprofit organization as soon as possible to determine whether you qualify for another immigration benefit or form of relief

03

Avoid Misinformation

Do not rely on rumors or social media for legal advice.

04

Protect Yourself from Fraud

Protect yourself from immigration fraud and only seek assistance from licensed attorneys or DOJ-accredited representatives.

05

Report Scams & Fraud

Report immigration scams and fraudulent activity to the appropriate authorities.
